The sound of Lamb is gentle (as a lamb) electronic jazzy breakbeat folk - a cross between Portishead , Everything But The Girl, and Reprazent. Louise Rhodes has an edgy folkie voice - she sings as if the words matter; yet the music is not sacrificed to the message either. Live double bass provides the jazz-inflections of the songs' grooves. Too heavy on the ballads, though, overall. Other Lamb albums have been far better. (The DVD mentioned on the back is not here, only the first CD.) 1. Melodramatic strings 2. Tense song that never really breaks the tension, but just gets denser 3. Good hook on chorus; funky otherwise 4. Modest ballad 5. Funky instrumental with goofy sound effects; could have been wilder, though 6. Another ballad that doesn't try to do too much and is better for the restraint 7. The anthem of modesty - "It makes me flow free to feel how small my life must be"; sounds of machinery are charmingly eccentric and this is a wonderful song for these times of arrogance and power 8. Wannabe pop ballad but it ends up oddly empty, despite the religiosity 9. Shambolic start to fluffy ballad 10. Ballads starting to wear thin 11. And as if to rescue the flow, a super, minimalist, dance floor remix of otherwise overblown track 8 12. A vulnerable and fragile ... uh, ballad with breaks; nice 13. Late night jazz shuffle version of classic tune 14. A wretchedly "adult" remix of track 8 15. "Closing time at the piano bar" frippery | ||
