Reviewed 2003-06-09
Satie is the turn-of-the-20th-century composer famous for his small piano studies. His work is characterized by neat, pleasing melodies, short pieces or sections (usually around a minute per movement) and a sort of whimsy. There are many recordings of his solo piano works, some of them adapted to instruments such as accordion. Eve Egoyan is a respected pianist performer of new works. Well, Satie's aren't new but they are modern and were a big influence on 20th century composers.
Play entire compositions (check the track listings on the back) rather than individual tracks (which tend to be on the order of one minute long). I will describe entire pieces below.

1-3. Light touch but contemplative
4. Again lightly played, but more light-hearted too
5-7. Simple melodies, perhaps giving rise to title "Childish Prattle", or vice versa
8. Jolly turn-of-the-century music hall sound, near ragtime feel
9-11. Evocation of a dog's life at home - reprimanded, left alone, played with; imagine a dog in these situations and how this music might serve as soundtrack
12. Feel of a sad walk home after a social screw-up
13-15. Light pieces of no particular distinction
16. A very nice folk-oriented melody due to Satie being influenced by some Romanian music he heard at an exposition in 1889
17-19. Slow, arpeggiated, delicate dances
20-23. Each section/track has a main harmonic theme that is rather simple and is repeated several times using different textures - loud, soft, etc.; it's interesting as a study to compare the effects of different textures playing the same notes
24-26. More somber and in some ways, more abstract, late-period (1919) work
27-29. Continuation of work in previous set of tracks, but more lush and sensuous
30. Short, formal waltz
31-32. A bit odd and edgy
33-36. More dog situational studies, a la tracks 9-11
37-57. "Immaculately calligraphed musical cameos", creating musical studies of various sports and pastimes of the day, the mid-1910s; this is one of Satie's most well-known and well-loved pieces; all but one of the 21 studies are under a minute, so play several, or all
