Trumpet-drum explorations -- lots of freedom but in a "safe" melodic environment. Mostly energetic and bright. Alessi doesn't let his smooth-jazz roots show, thankfully, but even his most "out there" attempts come across pleasant and mannered. Shane Endlsey on drums adds ferocity and volume (a bit too much, sometimes). Some tracks feature two trumpets and a trombone: 4,6,9 The concurrently released "This Against That" is a quintet album that has a fuller sound but lapses into corny habits more frequently. 1, 11 - Two takes on Ornette Coleman, similar sounding. Peaceful melody. 1 gets clattery in spots. 11 is gentler, features more technical tricks on trumpet 2- Brightly swinging (kind of). Carla Bley tune. 3- Improv, a fast patter. Pretty good. 4- Upbeat and flowing 5- Monk tune, mid/fast 6- Floaty 7- Upbeat, dancing brightness 8- Restrained trumpet, wild drums 9- Slowish; catchy overlapping horn lines 10- Fast ruiff and drum solo, into fast solos |
