Solo piano takes on Monk tunes, ranging from straight takes to fast abstract weirdness (10). Shows off some adept traditional-jazz roots... Madsen is an agile and precise player with a lot of soul, doing more than just random hammering -- tracks like 9 show how he can mix faithful Monk lines and sporadic flourishes.
1- Cool little swing-step, mid/fast
2- Sparse and playfully wacky, lots of muffled "prepared piano"
3- Mid/fast; jumpy but mostly straight
4*- Rapid tumbling notes
5*- Slow and grand feel, a Gershwinesque improv
7- Mid/fast and pleasant, after tinkly prepared-piano intro
9*- Playful, lots of little flourishes
10*- Fast abstract tumbling
12- Slow, delicate, lovingly played
6,8,11 - "Monkaludes". Small, short pallettes of sound.
