THIS IS GREAT!!! From Boston, The In Out have a sound somewhere in between The Fall and Beat Happening. The aesthetic is very garage, with a number of tracks with plate reverb vocals, which get very late 70s Brit sounding at times. Filled with a lot of great grooves with trebly guitars and catchy vocal hooks, this album is great, with a very faithful sound. I liked the first half of the album best, and my favorites are: 2, 7, 4, 1, 3, 8. 1. midtempo repetitive groove not far from a spy theme w/ trebly guitar 2. classic garagy punk sound, or beat happening. great! 3. tom-y drums and funky guitar rhythm. very cool and catchy. 4. slow intro, then slow groove, like the fall. awesome chorus. great! 5. looped voice samples slowed and scratched from vinyl. 6. slow groovin’ bassline, nice minimal guitar noodling in parts. 7. midtempo sinister feel, but still very restrained, distorted vox. 8. slow bassline grooves, funny but great intonation on vocals. 9. reverbed vocals over pedal tone bass and minimal guitar work 10. bluesy swing. 11. slow “epic last track” feel, with alternating head bopping groove. |
