NATACHA ATLAS – Something Dangerous
Mantra, 2003

Dangerous? Hardly. Atlas is easily one of world fusion's biggest stars. Since emerging from the band Transglobal Underground in the mid-90s, her lovely voice, sexy image, and genre-crossing music have all translated into a high-profile career. But frankly, there's not much meat on these bones. This album is clearly aimed at crossover audiences, with Atlas' exotic-sex-kitten vocals dumped into commercial mixes that will play well at your standard quasi-alternative college station, but will likely disappoint hardcore world music fans.

Fo's Picks: 4,14

1. 5:57 – pretty vocal w/ pretty strings; sleepy and overlong, but nice.
4. 5:15 – peppy Bollywood-ish vocal duet over growling synths and unchanging beat
6. 4:40 – cover of James Brown's classic ballad, hews closely to the original.
9. 5:52 – dark techno-groove with slow, wailing vocal layers. Sure to turn up in a movie.
12. 3:49 – swirly fusion groove, some flute samples, Arabic-style English vox
13. 4:25 – low, dramatic music, French vocal; drawn-out and atmospheric
14. 8:24 – long and dramatic, builds slowly with some good tension
