OLIVER MTUKUDZI – Collection: the Tuku Years Putumayo, 2003 A "best of" collection from the popular Zimbabwean guitarist/singer/songwriter, covering the years 1998-2002. Although Tuku (that’s his nickname) released six albums during this period, only three are available in the US (all from Putumayo). So there are some new discoveries here for American listeners including two live tracks (9 & 10). All good stuff, but I'd rather hear the African albums whole… Try any track. The "new" ones are 2, 5, 7, 9, 10 01. 6:23 – midtempo, perky rhythm and strong vocal; very straightforward tune 02. 5:38 – acoustic anti-war song; good interplay w/backing singers 03. 4:56 – midtempo but energetic; catchy layered melody 04. 6:11 – a favorite from Tuku Music: positive vibe, pretty melody, some English 05. 7:05 – relaxed and flowing, very smooth tune & vocals; religious lyrics 06. 5:28 – upbeat tune advising young lovers to be responsible; nice all around 07. 7:20 – very pretty but maybe too much gloss (has a smooth-jazz feel) 08. 6:05 – up/midtempo, that easy-rolling Zimbabwean rhythm sweeps you along 09. 4:38 – slow, live ballad: nice guitar/vocals/flute; from a film Tuku starred in (!) 10. 6:05 – live and uptempo, all in English (Bonnie Raitt has covered this) [Fo] - 8/22/03 |
