MARIZA – Fado Curvo

Born in Mozambique and raised in Portugal, Mariza is the hottest name in fado music today. This is her second album. Mariza has a fantastic voice, and it's given plenty of room here -- most of the arrangements are simple guitar & bass affairs. Her performances are true to the fado tradition of poetic songs sung with heartbreaking emotion, but she spends less time in the shadow of her idol, Amália Rodrigues, than she did on her first album. Very good, easily recommended.

All tracks are good. Fo's Picks: 2, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12

1. relaxed, lovely guitar, strong voice
2. moody; incredibly expressive vocal
3. lively song about a fair, simple
4. slow, heavy-hearted atmosphere
5. depressing as hell, with piano & cello
6. light, upbeat, cute - very pleasant
7. slow ballad: alternately quiet, stirring
8. folksy, swaying: a meditation on age
9. medium bounce: breezy & catchy
10. silent start, sad & heavy w/piano
11. slow, very strong vocal & 2 guitars
12. very dramatic piano + voice
