These field recordings from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso were originally released in 1976. Read the notes for the full story. As typical with this whole series, the stories of the music are fascinating.

*1. 5 drummers/singers w/a thrumming percussion & soaring vox.
2. Vibrating reed-instrument solo. Midtempo w/a cool sound.
3. Catchy lute solo by an 8-year old boy! Wow.
*4. Serious drumming in this medley suite by griots. It goes places
*5. Chants to chase away sickness. Drums, , coughs, screams.
6. High-pitches flutes/drums. Hypnotic & flowing.
7. Drums & call/response vocals. Hard to hear this one clearly.
*8. Complex lute solo w/taps & bursts of strings. Halting & cool.
*9. Wild drumming, faint vocals, too short.
