The ever-versatile Mr. Ma visits Brazil and sends us everything from sambas to bossa novas to classical postcards. Great guest stars (especially Rosa Passos on vocals), deliver equally strong performances on piano, guitars, horns, and percussion. Is there anything this guy can’t play? One star each track, but these stand out:
1. A fast and melodic duet for cello & piano. Too short.
2. A sexy take on a Jobim classic. Deliciously performed.
5. Intricate duet for piano & cello.
8. Fun little dance w/great accents from clarinet.
9. Gorgeous composition that blends cello & guitars.
10. Light & sophisticated, jazzy w/nice piano.
11. Delicately lyrical w/light touches of jazz.
13. A lush and romantic dance. Great vocals from Passos.
15. Playful samba w/nice arrangement featuring the band.
16. Cool flute/guitar/cello blend. Fast, slow, unpredictable.
