[coll]: ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF CHINA
World Music Network, 2003

CHINA – A broad assortment of traditional and popular music from China, including both contemporary and pre-Communist recordings. The usual Rough Guide standards apply.

ALL TRACKS GOOD. Fo’s picks: 1, 4, 8, 10

1. 5:34 – very catchy rock/pop anthem; starts quiet, then ramps up
2. 6:03 – modern Mongolian folksong: droning music, lilting fem vox
3. 2:11 – ancient song for solo qin (“chin” – like a zither)
4. 3:02 – a cowboy song! Really! Fem vox + lightly swinging orchestra
5. 5:13 – multi-part pop anthem, a controversial hit about Hong Kong
6. 4:59 – virtuoso solo ruan (lute); starts very quiet, strong at end
7. 1:58 – snippet of Cantonese opera, upbeat male vox, flutes, cymbals
8. 3:46 – marvelous! relaxed trad song with fem vox, then quick dance
9. 2:05 – all-girl punk band! lyrics and style much like Shonen Knife
10. 5:17 – chill-out electronics with erhu (fiddle) + filtered spoken-word
11. 2:34 – semi-trad Mandarin song, slow w/sweet fem vox.
12. 4:52 – meditative solo qin, very well played
