Dark, sultry, self-conscious post-rock (with vocals); post-rock is a term that has been overused, probably after the first Red Sparrowes album came out. Well this predates Red Sparrowes by more than two years and sounds nothing like that 'post-metal' (my term) outfit. This incorporates elements of noir and jazz, making it playable next to Nick Cave, Spain and Tom Waits (perhaps only the slower tracks would fit next to Waits, as some of this record is VERY energetic). This band seems to be unrecognized among the truly hip for some reason. (Irony works better when you don't put it in quotes). I like 3, 6, 9 the best as well as 1, 5, 7. 1 long, drawn out, more energy than Waits, 6/8 2 relaxed, you'd hear this at a jazz-club 3 rocking 4 shuffling, relaxed, another jazz-club one 5 slower, classic, fits with Waits, elements of post-rock (rocking and non rocking parts, like Mogwai with vocals, but still, elements of that sultry jazz-club thing). 6 complete balls-out rocking 7 6/8, sparse, ballad, almost country-violin 8 fast, some kind of motif I've heard before but can't place it 9 best track, LONG, but worth the length, F minor, sultry, climactic, I dare not use the term apocalyptic in this case, although the second chorus goes on for almost 3 minutes, much like Spain's 'World of Blue', but better 10 nice little dinner-party ending | ||
