Monsieur Leroc: Oh La La!
Down-and-dirty authentic-sounding funk, with a swirl of hip-hop. Horns and nasty bass and wow-wow organ and flute, etc., with some hip-hop scratching and electronic glitching and sampling. Kinda like funk songs about the sketchy funk clientele—totally tongue-in-cheek clever lyrics and subjects. Melodies have a strange edge, sometimes, going just slightly astray from the expected. Vocals are falsetto, plus sometimes a guy with a greasy voice who does quasi-rapping/singing that half the time doesn’t rhyme. (the whole album reminds me of that Beck song, Deborah.) Hilarious and over the top, fun to listen to.
1. (3:11) midtempo funk groove. Hawaiian Bikini Inspector. Need I say more?
*2. (4:49) slower, some scratching, male falsettos and female sass, soulful song about a guy defending his slob lifestyle. Flute solos. Funny!
3. (5:19) groovy midtempo beats, plus scratches, organ, samples of big band horns, and synth, with vocals and yeah yeahs.
4. (3:33) more acousticy funk—slinky song of pursuit “wanna get ya home soon” funny!
*5. (2:23) “Hot Carl”—the laid-back theme song for a big lazy sleazy guy, complete with labored grunts that mean “dancing” HA!
6. (4:29) groovy and laid-back—the makeout song. Vibes, shimmery synth, organ, wow-wow guitar, piano. Still strong beats.
7. (3:36) scratchy, bass, sampled instruments and voices; a non-rhyming singsong rap
8. (0:53) bumpin’ interlude with piano and vocals in German
9. (3:43) complex beats, retro jazz samples: horns, piano, and snippets of female song and speech.
10. (2:51) twangy walkin’ tempo, with oooh’s samples of vocals (sounds like “cowboy” setting on keyboard stock rhythms), instrumental
*11. (4:41) laidback beats, shimmery synth chords, flute solos, rainy song, more greasy song-rap
12. (4:20) funky groove, wow-wow guitar, piano, some mmmm-hmm’s. vocals in the form of isolated samples. (some speech in Arabic?)
*13. (1:18) superfunky, bass and scratches, flute soloing
*14. (2:46) vocals in French, horns, deep bass, with male and female “onhh-honhh-honnh” “French” giggling (the chorus means: dirty enough for me, too dirty for you)
15. (2:50) slower, laid back, slinky, vibes, horns, beats, synths—a “slow dance”
16. (5:31) funky hip-hop, with scratching, electro buzzing, organ, dominated by lassitude rap
