Narcissus – Crave and Collapse (Abacus Recordings)
Hardcore, dipping its bloody fingers into both emo and metal, and coming off as extremely progressive and experimental. As such, it’s a gem, but the vocals tread a fine line between emo and emotional. When he succeeds, though, he sounds great. Otherwise, expect disjointed guitars and bass, time-signature changes, and on-a-dime shifts between the above styles. These guys are definitely talented. Comparable to Extol (sans the black metal leanings), Darkest Hour (when doing the metal thing), and even bands like Shai Hulud or Zao. Also, I can’t tell for sure, but I think the band has a religious lean.
Tracks:
1) Nice progressive hardcore, with lots of clean vocals that tread the fine line between emo and actually emotional vocals. The music is great, though.
2) A catchy tune, and the vocals definitely run back and forth between emo and good.
3) Awesome hardcore, sounds like Tool at times, great angry pieces in the middle.
4) More typical hardcore, especially towards the end, and I think they’re getting a little too preachy, but this is still enjoyable.
5) Layered, arpegiated guitar chords, soulful vocals, and trippy FX, I like a whole lot. Ends with a minute of just noisy keyboards.
6) Holy crap! This is definitely more metal-core, even though the clean vocals are still there. Great, heavy song.
7) Catchy, melodic, tune, but also heavy, especially towards the end, where it gets really trippy. I dig.
8) All melodic, all clean, all the time, kinda gets annoying, but it’s still a good song.
9) Heavier, which is to say, better.
10) I like the beginning a lot, and the vocals are really pretty good. Layered guitars, and sounds heavy at times, too.
11) Another quiet, mellow start with just layered guitars and keys, and the drums fade in slowly, and then it becomes a little kick-ass. Clean vox all the way through, nice ones, though.
12) He does a lot of singing on this one, and it works quite well; the guitars sound nice too, and there’s a killer bass riff.
13) Closing instrumental, acoustic guitar, keyboard FX, sounds pointless, ignore.
