Incredibly catchy, experimental, lo-fi indie pop. There’s something here for everyone, from jangly guitar numbers, to insane drum machine and guitar freak-outs, to the most incredibly catchy organ riffs since that skanky little bit from the chorus of Outkast’s “Hey Ya”. The thematic obsession with death in the lyrics contrasts with the sometimes cute, sometimes beautiful, always amazingly engaging and catchy music. It can bring to mind certain efforts by the Flaming Lips or the earlier Microphones, but it’s really a completely distinctive brand of demented, sunny pop tunes. The Unicorns discard typical pop structure and forge spastic songs that are just plain fun.
One of my favorite debuts in a long time; all tracks are highly recommended.
Everyone must play this (or face death by stampede from 1000 Canadian gnomes with Flock of Seagulls haircuts and matching pink suits)!!!

1. Organ driven midtempo number. Short and sweet.
*2. Ominous organ and bass. Strident, pounding, with awesome harmonies.
3. Lovely synth intro, softer song.
*4. Pennywhistle solo starts this mellow guitar rocker. Great start/stop mechanisms. FCC at 2:36.
**5. Single material. Bouncy, insane. Great song!
6. Short, harsh guitar, screamed vocals.
7. Softer, strummed guitar. Gets crazy and a bit cutesy near the end, with back and forth vocals. Manic/depressive sort of song.
*8. Poignant reflection on fame. Soft, organ driven.
**9. A song about unicorns. A lovely, driving, inescapably catchy song about unicorns. Wow.
*10. Astute observations on the Bush administration's policies. And with fiddle!
*11. “Asshole” at 1:20. FCC? Wonderful song, all squealing guitars and organ, then soft lyrics and harmonies overlaid.
**12. Faster, lots of ‘oh oh ohs’ in the vocals. Powerful ending.
*13. Soft song about dying. Goes raving mad, then ends abruptly.
