Really disturbing, frequently difficult to listen to. A combo of anarchic jazz and creepy noise. Male vocals alternate between dead and psychotic. The understated rumblings of some tracks are at times more unsettling than the twisted chaos of others. The fact that these guys are local makes me want to buy stronger locks for my door. Lyrics are clean, although the music will still traumatize small children. Try: 4. Jazz like 100 cars crashing into splinters all at once, plus muffled tortured screams (there is a LOT of screaming on this album). 5. Grinding, repetitive noise like the heartbeat of a psychopath. The screaming gives way near the end to gross retching sounds. 8. Sadistic carnival organ grinder meets opera singer deranged by syphilis. Together they torture Bat Boy with electric bone saws. It continues long after the voices go quiet. 10. Unintentionally funny post-apocalyptic spoken word poem. 12. Female vocals intoned over strange swooping string and guitar. 17. Gershwin lyrics dully muttered over a funereal, plodding march. Zombie jazz. 21. Dreamy, trippy, gently rhythmic; a peaceful riposte to the stomach-turning excitement that characterizes the album. - riana 2/4/04 |
