Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2004-04-12 | ||
A revisit of very '60s mod pop -- echoey vocals, some Beatlesque frills (3), lots of Motown influence (6,8), and a very British feel. Toe-tapping and nostalgic, with crashing modern beats backing it all up. Noonday Undergound is the brainchild of Simon Dine of Adventures in Stereo. He uses a variety of vocalists, mostly female, with Paul Weller singing on 8 and 13. All tracks mid/fast unless noted. 1- Spooky-style instrumental, into upbeat fuzz 2- Minor-key, echoey psych-pop 3- Happy, with touches like harpsichord & trumpet 4- Hi-stepping go-go pop; a rework of "Happy Together" 5- Midtempo. Sad. 6- Poppish R&B 7- Jumping jazzy blip 8- Soulful sound, w/Paul Weller singing 9- Minor key, strong cloudy-day melody 10- Same as 7 11- Slowish, soft 12- Mod/retro pop trip, mostly instrumental 13- Midtempo, mysterious 14- Mid/slow with strings, a loungy closer. Spaced-out middle segment. |
