Album Review

They call themselves The Music Lovers – but it is more like – the Orchestral Pop Circa-1975 Music Lovers! Yeah, okay, this is retro pop. There is plenty of that grandiose melodic string/horn section that sounds like the color lavender. Actually, imagine the color lavender grooving with a silk shirt and a stylish hat on the deck of The Love Boat. That is what this album sounds like. Even the songs that aren’t so bombastic have this flavor – a lot of it has to do with his swinging vocals, which are so, well, from another era that is difficult for me to pinpoint. At their more modern moments, they sound like groovin’ chamber pop. I’ve listened to it a few times and I like it now. It is very British. – Matt M.

Play this song *
1. * Mid-up tempo – this song is fun. Play it just to challenge your brain to find adjectives to describe it. The Love Boat! Man, I used to hate the show when I was a kid – it came on before Scooby-Doo, and I always sat through the last few minutes frantically bored and anxious for the Hanna Barbara world to begin.
2. Mid-tempo – this one has a funky baseline.
3. * Mid-up-tempo – Oh yeah, over the top, indeed. Trombones!
4. Mid-tempo – more of a modern rock song than the others. I like the “La-La-La-La” backing vocals.
5. *Down-tempo – very acoustic and stripped down. I like the bells at the end.
6. fifteen seconds of “hidden track dead time”
- Down-tempo – meandering loungey stuff.
