Lo-fi amateurish. Sounds like people makin’ stuff up in a garage, only with lots of post-production work. Elec guitar, congas, concertina . . . all minor keys with half-spoken vocals. Beat samples are homemade from vocals or instruments, and all the spliced-together pieces are charmingly off-tempo. (oohh—here it is. It’s hippie hop. HAH!) And she sings in a REALLY STRONG Chicago accent, which lends the new-agey-peace-and-hope lyrics a curiously thuggish overtone. (no offense if you’re from Chicago—it’s just a funny juxtaposition.) I can’t tell if it’s just hilariously bad, or cheerfully ironically bad on purpose. But bad it is. Oh dear god.
1. (3:53) faux lo-fi hip hop?
2. (2:25) more rhythmic and drivingly melodic (what’s UP with the lyrics?)
3. (3:26) vocals, elec. guitar and congas. Slow.
4. (3:35) concertina, drums n’ vocals, harmonies.
5. (3:32) noisy elec guitar, congas, vocals w/ harmonies
6. (1:37) driving hip-hoppy; asking Significant Questions; sampled beats
7. (2:18) muted elec. guitar, lots of World Peace lyrics
8. (3:02) driving bassy guitar and woodblock, beat-poetry lyrics
9. (3:49) ratchet and congas, call-and-answer vocals, oohs.
10. (3:05) dark little tap dance; piano and congas, vocals
11. (1:38) echoing strident elec guitar, echoing vocals, almost major key
12. (3:07) congas, beat poet vocals and backup, minimal elec. guitar
13. (3:24) conga, layered vocals about “I Like Zero”
14. (3:13) driving electric guitar n’ bass, leisurely vocals
15. (3:32) slow chugging bass n’ perc, with rappy vocals
16. (3:03) repetitive sound bg, ritualistic lyrics about the World
17. (2:44) rocky guitar, “badass” vocals
18. (1:42) funky-ish guitar and high-mixed vocals about the Nighttime.
