Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2003-12-20 | ||
Large orchestra, playing dark and menacing compositions that follow slow composed lines. There's also a great deal of freedom, in the form of chaotic improvisation that's written into the mix. The music leaves spaces for the group to cut loose and improvise for an orchestra-tuning-up sound. Like most ensembles of its type, the group is characterized by a large, lumbering sound. See London Improvisers Orchestra, Jeff Kaiser's Ockodektet, or Marco Eneidi (American Jungle Orchestra) for comparison points. Some parts have a sour, dissonant sound, where I'm guessing Rosenberg follows Anthony Braxton's example by letting the players choose the notes themselves. 1- Dark, a bit menacing. Characterized by long unison tones, with occasional bits of fast scrabbly chaos 2- Starts with the same dark menacing feel. But it's gentler, with long-note progressions that "feel" more orchestral. 3- Includes quiet flurries of group improv for a faster, busier feel. Also some soprano wordless vocal 4- More long tones, with piano and trumpet (among others) improvising for some nice color 5- Chirpy double-time pulses, a quicker pace |
