Album Review

Avant-jazz quintet with an upbeat chamber-y sound (vibraphone, some sparkling dry trumpet) led by Maroney's "hyperpiano" -- his word for using metal bowls and other objects on the strings, creating bendy sounds like you get with a guitar slide.

(See his album, "Hyperpiano" ... three long tracks displaying the concept.)

Last three tracks center on a two-note beat that's compelling but gets a bit repetitious, the extreme being the final track.

1- Strong little theme, but short
2*- Stumbly midtempo pace, cool disposition
3- Sparse chamber feel, with some fast flurries
4- Mid/fast and tumbling, w/pitter-patter raindrop feel. Bouncy hyperpiano sounds near the end.
5*- Continues the pitter-patter rhythm; a bit more aggressive than 4
6- Repetitious two-beat counterpoint exercise. Thankfully only 2 minutes!
