Krakauer has been trying to drag klezmer into the 21st century for a while with his Klezmer Madness group. The version of the group presented here even adds a turntablist on a few tracks for the cutting edge sound, but there are still plenty of traditional tracks for those fond of the old school. This particular disc really showcases the diverse range of the band and manages to capture their live energy. I hadn’t really heard of guitarist Sheryl Bailey before, but she really steals the show on the modern tunes in a Marc Ribot sort of way. **1. Pounding funk with cool samples and excellent guitar 2. Straight up klezmer *3. Med tempo swirling klezmer 4. Wailing ballad 5. Med tempo klezmer funk *6. Starts slow then speeds and builds to loud climax then back down 7. Alternates between ballad and grind *8. Swingy klez funk 9. Nice drum solo 10. Happy traditional closer (watch out for :30 of applause and introductions at the end) *11. Alternate version of #1, featuring more excellent guitar. The guitar solo is about 2 min long, solo clarinet starts up after a minute of silence. Stupid #@$# hidden tracks. |
