It’s always great to get high quality music on pretty damn obscure labels. In this case it’s Golden Lake, a Scottish metal label providing you with some rather excellent, raging Polish black metal.
The icing on the cake was to find that this band seems to have nothing to do with the sketchy, reactionary fuckwad aspects of the Polish BM scene (Graveland, Kristalnacht, Veles). Anyway, this lies somewhere around certain parts of early Cradle of Filth & Dimmu Borgir + a good chunk of that great bombast Limbonic Art & Emperor had. Overall, the mix on this album is excellent since the bass sounds real and balances with everything else. No toilet-level “über-kvlt” stuff going here.
((1)) Classical & horror-soundtrack like keyboard thingy with some moaning woman. Sounds a bit like old Mortiis. Nice sounding but should’ve been longer.
(((2))) Natural bass, aggressive blasting beats, orchestral keyboards & guttural grim vocals. Somewhere around old Cradle of Filth mixed with Limbonic Art & maybe even Armsvartner (if you’ve ever heard them).
(((3))) More real sounding bass & some killer melodic parts. Mid-tempo & atmospheric then very bass/drums heavy and more of those every present ascending/descending scales. Think: Limbonic Art circa: “Moon In Scorpio”.
(((4))) Wailing fast, rolling tempo & lots of just amazing bass playing (that's an a really awesome mix!) . A pretty strong nod to older Cradle of Filth but with more of an emphasis on ‘straight-ahead’ heavy/black metal playing rather than jumping around to chapters & sub-chapters of the song.
((((5)))) Full-on fast-a hell bass (ok, maybe not as fast as Vondur but not as silly as Vondur either!) and some Cradle-like “horror atmospheres” aka: keyboards/vocals only breakdowns.
(((6))) Slower to mid-tempo but with more keyboard/vocal breakdowns. Excellent 4-string action. Damn, Adrian Nefarious is the Steve Harris of Black Metal! Very nice sweeping, classical style sections ‘ala Emperor & Limbonic Art.
(((7))) Excellent trad-metal intro (think: ‘Maiden on speed, old In Flames, et. al) then blasting to groovin’ grimness. Most of the lyrics are in Polski which I can’t make head or tails of.
(((8))) Very cool thrash-style riff with a more bombastic keyboard fills, Cradle/Limbnonic Art like ‘gothic horror black metal’ feeling all the through. Goes back & forth to the basic, thrash/trad-metal riffing.
