Album Review

This is the highly-anticipated work of Dave Grohl & friends. This features 11 legendary heavy metal vocalists (including two 2 “crossover” innovators). Grohl grew up listening to these singers and now gets to play with them. Who WOULDN’T wanna do an album like that? Grohl recorded all of the riffs and later had each vocalist create lyrics & vocals around them.
Regardless of all of the hype & marketing - this is worthwhile listening. Southern Lord did a nice job stepping up on this one, when the majors were still trying to figure out who Cronos is. If you don’t know who these vocalists are - you got a hell of a lot of learning to do!

((((1)))) “Creepy” intro then a sort of “Venom with Sepultura riffs” thing. Simple structure & mid-tempo pace, later speeds up at 2:57) Sounds awesome - as it’s always good to hear the ‘ol Geordie Cronos beltin’ out his trademarks (rolled ‘r’’s on parts like “rrrrestless & wild!”; “R-rright” & his other trademark: “c’m-oonnnnnn!!!”).
(((2))) File under “pretty good”. Grohl’s riffing here is typical of that overused style now plaguing too many bands, i.e. that formula of “1-2-3-4 stop” & play over & over & over again. Otherwise, the vocals are really good & the breakdown & high string guitar notes are really cool. Eventually gets better towards the end.
(((((3))))) This is the single & video (maybe the onlyone?) but who cares about ‘hits’? - This is fuckin’ pure 1978-82 era Motorhead style, baby! Crank it & worship it!!!
(((4))) Weird, fast over-the-top, speedy punk something like C.O.C. crossed with the Cows or Zeke. Doesn’t sound even remotely like C.O.C. despite it’s Mike Dean doing the vox. A “no-brainer”.
(((5))) The more “metal” side of D.R.I. but not bad, some of this sounds like been on their ‘87 “Crossover” album. Really good lyrics about environmental devastation. The breakdown sounds like the one in “Violent Pacification”
(((((6))))) This is intentionally supposed to sound “as if Lee Dorrian fronted Trouble”. In fact, the main riff is an exact copy of Trouble’s “The Tempter” aka: GODLY, psychedelic DOOM! Later it bridges NWOBHM & 70’s rock with 90’s doom metal. Another tune with good lyrics.
((((7)))) Wino of The Obsessed, St. Vitus, et. al. doing some very nice & heavy psych-rock. Sounds like his current band, The Hidden Hand or Blind Dog mixed with Hawkwind (sans synths).
((8)) Are you sure this Tom G. Warrior? Weird. Simple 1-2 riff over simple beats. This is uh, I dunno - too boring, too ‘different’ and the worst of all too NORMAL!
(((9))) Rhythmic, wild chord patterns structure with trippy sci-fi rock of the recent VoiVod style. Snake’s voice sounds great here especially on the breakdowns. Super catchy, melodic psych-pop(?) rock.
((10)) Fuzzy-wah-wah laden 70’s heaviness with one of the best “70’s influenced 80’s-era vocalists” - Eric Wagner of Trouble. The riffing, granted could have been better but - it’s always nice to hear this dude’s vocals. Mixing Led Zep, Free, and some other stuff that was cranked on the stereo via your older brother’s El Camino.
((((11)))) “Spoooky” intro then slowly strummed guitars & whispering which builds up to pretty basic riffing but it’s good to hear the King play with someone who isn’t as ‘advanced’ as 6-string stingers like Sherman, Denner or LaRoque.
