An anti-hip-hop, hip-hop album. I know you think I don't know what the hell I'm talking about (and you're probably right), but bear with me. Object (aka Laurence English) has taken hip-hop-like beats, subverted them and given them a haunting, eerie appeal that encompasses the Pandemic album. Mostly comprised of instrumental lyrics, four vocal tracks are sprinkled in to give an overall balanced effect. English seems to be comfortable creating off-beat rhythms which have the potential of appealing to a wide audience as well as drop rhymes to those exact beats. the good: well put together; nice overall feel the bad: a couple of tracks were too repetitive for my taste the ugly: nuthin' potty-mouth tracks: track 2---see inside for details (note: rating numbers are out of 10 and following each track description) 1.Horizon: tribal sounding; deep bass; cool samples (8) 2.Subtext (Courage/Hope): haunting sounds; chanting; hip-hop beats; swears: “more of the shit that they serve” @ (-3:29&-0:53) 3.Momentary Flare: slower; heavy beats & bass; (7) 4.Fluid Note: trip-hop beats; flutes in b/g (8) 5.Insideout: crunchy intro; some off-tempo beats (8) 6.Kappa: undefined beats; too repetitive (6) 7.Be Seeing You: deep bass; faster beat than all other tracks (7) 8.Floating: extremely haunting and deep bass-line 9.Lapse: cool samples on intro; something out of a horror video game; too repetitive (5) 10.Fallout: interesting piano as back-drop; slower beats (7) review courtesy of rE\dOx |
