Necronomicon – The Sacred Medicines (Skyscraper)
Straight ahead death metal that gets a few ideas from Morbid Angel. This band has been around a while (1991) and have dropped a lot of the Egyptian theme of their last record in favor of more pagan spiritual themes. There are some Canadian Indian themes including some tradition Indian sounds. Heavy, yet they don’t rely completely on super techie music. I am surprised on the North American Indian parts work. Check out tracks 5/6 together to see what I mean.
**1. Fast and heavy out of the gate with quick individual notes on guitar. It’s fast and heavy but also catchy. There are female vocals, not singing works, for a chorus.
**2. Starts slower with more of a groove and brutal vocals you can almost understand. Stays in the slow groove most of the track. Speeds up towards the end and has a dead ringer for a Ministry guitar riff.
4. Heavy, mid paced track with some consistent double bass drums. 6. Starts with Indian chant that is fading out from track
5. Straight forward and good guitar riffs. Indian chanting over the top of the guitar towards the end.
**8. A lot like their first album with slightly Egyptian sounding guitar riff. Very metal.
9. Slower, heavy, with solid double-bass drumming. Doesn’t change much or go far from the main idea. More female vocals, not singing words, as a chorus.
10. Long instrumental that begins quiet. After the quiet into it kicks into medium paced thrash-y death metal. There is a quiet interlude.
11. Fast and heavy right away. Reminds me of Morbid Angel.
