THE MICROPHONES - Live in Japan (K Records)
The Microphones were, are, is Phil Elvrum along with whichever buddy is in town that week. This record documents the newer direction Phil is heading with his heralded project. We see a more stripped down acousticy songwriting Phil than we are used to. Gone are the layers of odd instrumentation and chorusÍ of voices, but then again this is a live record. What shines here is the realization that without all the fancy studio trickery, Phil Elvrum is an amazing songwriter. Too band his drunk friends mess up half the songs on this record. Overall Im a bit disappointed, especially after seeing him live recently and being blown away. But the whole thing is worth it for the first 2 tracks. Dig.

**1-(4:00) This song is beautiful. Just PhilÍs voice and his acoustic guitar. Amazing!
**2-(2:15) Classic Microphone tune from ñthe Glow Pt2î. Again Phil and a guitar. Beautiful!
3-(11:00) Phil with band, very loosey goosey, epic and sloppy. Phil, loose the band!
4-(1:50) Phil alone again. Good song, little more lo-fi
*5-(0:50) Phil singing the melody of My Favorite Things. Sounds like he made up the words on the spot!
*6- (0:50) PhilÍs rendition of silent night with new words by him. again sounds like he winged it
7-(1:11) Phil solo again. Nice song
8-(3:43) Fear the band, they are back. This is a great song but the band blows
9-(5:00) Spooky and dark but a chorus of bad voices by the band hurts me. Great song ruined
*10-(3:00) Odd tuning, loose guitar, quite beat, not bad so far. Best band track on the CD
11-(3:40) Imagine the brilliant Neil Young backed by little tommies 7th grade garage band.. poo
