G-Man is Gez Varley, half of the legendary electronica group LFO. LFO did very little work, and in his spare time, Gez did solo stuff under “G-Man”. Some of it was pretty interesting and I’d recommend checking it out. This album, a collection of remixes, in my humble opinion, sucks. It’s a really dated sounding attempt at tech-house. Full of samples that add nothing to the tracks. Play: 3 (maybe)
1) Pure cheese. Generic late-90’s trance feel with awkward vox about love, and the standard Oakenfold-esque anthems and builds. 2) Minimal tech-ish house. Very irritating loops and bass-lines. No idea what they were thinking. 3) Slower cut, down at around 110-bpm. Really old school almost Kraftwerk-style beat, with lots of silly little melodies and really bizarre little vocal samples like “condition, ultra-violence”. Trippy. 4) Generic progressive trance track with new-wave sounding vocal sample and grinding electro bassline. 5) Annoying intro with mechanical sounding guy. Grating techy beat. 6) Warm acid jazz sound. Cool bass work, but once again, horribly dated sounding beats. Nice work on vibes but songs gets repetitive quick. 7) Funk guitar and snare/high-hat beat. Rediculous vocals with a chorus “you are invited inside, inside your emotions you don’t have to hide”. These are the most dated beats I’ve ever heard! Sounds like the demo on a Cassio keyboard or something…sheesh. Is this meant to be campy? 8) Hard Tech-house. More sloppy production and annoying samples… 9) Funky bassline and minimal beats. Synths and funky snare hits enter with a series of samples. Song goes nowhere though and gets boring. 10) This is so cheesy! Fender Rhodes with other acid sounds over sad house beat. Again, think Cassio Demo. 11) Atmospheric synths and off-beat snare hits with random keyboard noodleing. 12) Dubbed out. Echo-y vox with simple harsh tech-y loops.
