BIO RITMO – “Bio Ritmo”
Locutor, 2004

USA – Excellent salsa from Bio Ritmo. This is their first new album in 6 years. The group’s current goal is to break Latin pop free from the ruts of insipid lyrics, cheesy presentation, and musical monotony which have come to plague it. They do this with smart, dextrous wordplay and vibrant grooves that recall the “ghetto salsa” of the 1970s, with just a few well-placed touches of the odd or unexpected. Fun stuff!

All tracks are great! Fo’s picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7

1. 4:45 – upbeat, feel-good rhythm, gets you up and dancing
2. 5:36 – more abstract, P. Rican bomba with odd breaks & harmonies
3. 4:31 – strong uptempo beat, compelling vocals with a serious touch
4. 6:31 – samba in the mix, Fender Rhodes piano solo, very cool stuff
5. 5:54 – dark piano vamp, good solos, a samba break, and duck calls!
6. 5:10 – more straightforward: uptempo but serious, good trumpet
7. 4:14 – Latin-jazz instrumental inspired by 70’s cop-chase scenes
8. 5:54 – soft lounge-exotica ballad: vocal, piano, bongos; trumpet solo
