Album Review
Manoneet Singh
Reviewed 2004-08-05
A fusion of Spanish/ Hebrew/ klezmer/ newage/ Mediterranean music performed solidly by Luz and her musicians. The Santa Fe, N.M., resident sings in Ladino, a hybrid of Hebrew and 15th century Spanish, and the ancient language of Sephardic Jews. Rich and sensual ballads and traditional prayers are presented in a modern style that preserves and often augments their classic beauty.

Track 1: Very cool Middle eastern strumming and pipes weaved into a beautiful western arrangement. Solid and passionate vox. Mid-to-up tempo.

Track 2: Slow tempo ballad. Lovely work on flamenco guitar.

Track 3: Slow tempo prayer. Note how the exotic timbres of the oud and Oriental violin provide a backdrop for the emotive vox.

Track 4: Another very slow tempo prayer that moves fluidly and deeply. The tenor sax is a perfect accompaniment to Luz’s warm vocals.

Track 5: Flamenco guitar and steady drumming texture a beautiful prayer

Track 6: Passionate ballad. Begins slow and sensual, then the mood and tempo pick up at ~ 3:00.

Track 7: Another soft and slow ballad showcasing Luz’s vocals.

Track 8: Mid tempo Mediterranean ballad. Almost danceable.

Track 9: Slow, simple prayer sung to the accompaniment of the accordion.

Track 10: Slow, tense composition

Track 11: Most “western” track of the album. Pop feel and rap(!) interlude at ~3:30. Chorus of children sing stanzas in English.
