Squarepusher is back yet again, and he’s as badass as ever!
In large part, this is intense electronica – complex, insane beats and rhythms over trippy yet gorgeous melodies. The focus of this album is definitely Sqaurepusher’s funky, inventive bass playing.
However, there are also ambient, Classical sounding tracks as well. It is amazing how much the tracks vary in feel and style. This album can suit almost any show.
The album sounds like a retooling of a lot of his older stuff, including both the jazzier tunes and the grittier beat-heavy stuff. But this release includes a lot of live recordings, so it contains all the insanity of his live performances.
Most tracks kick ass but PLAY TRACK 3!!! Fantastic blend of rock and electronica with the most rockin’ beat and wonderful melody. I also love track 13, which is blazingly fast and goddamn funky. Also track 12, which is a great downtempo groove. And try tracks 4, 14, 15 for chill, quasi-Classical guitar.

*1. Blazingly fast, nutty bass lines. Atmospheric background synth sound like a church organ. Later more synths pound out a dramatic melody. Live recording, but the crowd presence is minimized. This rocks! (8:33)
2. Atmospheric. Another live recording. Freeform bass solo over dark noise. Ranges from meditative to fast and jammin’. (3:31)
**3. This is so fucking beautiful! Live drums rock out with an incredible beat over the most gorgeous synth & guitar melody. Drum line is complex and becomes gradually more unruly. Then finally all the voices come together again and everything rocks out so hard that your head explodes. (6:55)
*4. Playful, ethereal bass-guitar duet, sounds much like a JS Bach melody. Cool. (2:00)
5. Opens with sustained note over muted guitar strums. Hip hop style beat comes in, then echoing, highly distorted voice samples. This is dark stuff, noisy stuff. Hip hop for the year 3450, maybe? (8:33)
6. Spooky chimes slowly give way to super fast beat. Very robotic. (5:43)
7. Live recording of virtuosic bass solo as crowd cheers along. (1:29)
8. Hard fuzz morphs into dark, rhythmic madness and computer beeps. Ambient synths join in later for a bizarre contrast effect. (7:44)
9. Chaotic noise gives way to a frantic sounding guitar performance. (4:06)
10. Unsettling, oscillating synth/noise with sporadic guitar. (1:53)
11. Thumping, hard beat with outrageous noises. Total chaos. (8:33)
*12. Freeform drum playing drops into ambient groove with Church organ-like synths. Nice downtempo beat! (6:28)
*13. Hilarious opening recorded from concert. Super funky, bass over fast, insane beats. Builds over time. Mesmerizing and rockin’ at the same time. (9:27)
*14. Duet of child-like melodies. This is so relaxing and endearing. (2:10)
*15. Spanish-sounding guitar trio with Squarepusher’s own unique spin. Very warm and personal. (2:36)
