TOOTS & THE MAYTALS – “True Love”
V2, 2004
Reggae god Toots Hibbert teams up with a bunch of BIG NAME ROCK STARS™ and other greats like Bunny Wailer and U-Roy to revisit all your favorite Toots & The Maytals hits from back in the day.
Crass commercialism? You bet! But that’s okay. The grooves are generally hot, some of the match-ups work out much better than you’d expect (who knew Bonnie Raitt could do reggae?), and this is a pretty good party record if you don’t mind all the slickness. Guest stars indicated below…
Fo’s picks: 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12
1. Willie Nelson: strong beat, cool duet
2. Bonnie Raitt: real nice bluesy blend
3. Eric Clapton: quick ska, goes nowhere
4. Ryan Adams: Toots solid, Ryan limp
5. Shaggy & Rahzel: peppy dancehall
6. Jeff Beck: good vox, groove, guitar
7. No Doubt: party ska, tight production
8. Trey Anastasio: cute calypso ditty
9. Bootsy Collins/Roots: old-school funky
10. Ken Boothe/Marcia Griffiths: a march
11. Terry Hall/Skatalites/U-Roy: happy!
12. Bunny Wailer: Rasta rock, good vox
13. Ben Harper: simple intro, rootsy
14. Keith Richards: relaxed, classic feel
15. Rachael Yamagata: moody swirl
