WILLIAM WARFIELD – “Something Within Me” Delmark, 2004 This is a unique document. William Warfield, famed singer of African-American spirituals (best known for his work in “Showboat” and “Porgy and Bess”), teamed up with Bill Carter’s dixieland band in 2000 for a special concert in San Francisco. The day before, they recorded this great set of old-time gospel tunes and New Orleans jazz. Warfield, aged 79 at the time, played piano and sang with Carter’s septet on 9 tracks, then the band added 8 more (some in a separate session). It's a fine tribute to Warfield, who passed away in 2002.
