Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2004-05-29 | ||
Post-bop pieces with a heavy acoustic-bass emphasis and occasional spoken word (1,5,9). The band includes piano and trumpet, but the bass usually takes the fore, with Moffett spinning some catchy and compelling solos. Even the slow tracks pack some nimble pizzacato playing. Several tracks have a fast, energetic feel that gets the whole quartet hopping. Charnett switches to electric fretless on (4) and (13) for a more liquid sound. Charnett's name is a combination of Charles and Ornette, and his music honors the legacy of both men, in some ways. He's known for following the Harmolodic concepts laid down by Ornette. And he frequently plays with brothers Cody (drums) and Mondre (trumpet), both of whom appear on this session. 1- Wistful and breezy 2- Midtempo and easygoing, a rich cavernous sound 3- Fast jam 4- Fast melody that makes me think of Alpine scenery, dunno why 5- Speedy urban bebop w/poetry, really cool 6- Midtempo. Studious classical feel with quick-fingered bass 7- Snappy mid/fast riff, catchy instrumental 8, 10 - Solo bass interludes 9- Mid/fast mysterious swing. Poem about homeless life 11- Quick bebop snippet 12- Tangly and fairly fast 13- Really fast, but w/a drawn-out, sparse feel 14- Slow, Asian-tinged meditation. Solo bass, long but engrossing |
