BEBO & CIGALA – “Lágrimas Negras”
Calle 54, 2004

Dieguito el Cigala is a young Spanish flamenco singer. Bebo Valdés is an old Cuban pianist. What happens when you put them together? Magic. Cigala’s thin, raspy voice is full of passion (think of the Gipsy Kings), offering an oddly satisfying contrast to Bebo’s elegantly understated piano. The tunes are all pretty similar, with poetically styled, wordly lyrics of love and loss, plus subdued bass and minimal percussion to round out the sound. A gorgeous, unassuming little record, well worth hearing.

ALL GOOD! Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 8

1. 3:20 – medium tempo, slightly jazzy touch
2. 4:03 – melancholy, sounds a lot like “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”
3. 5:31 – more upbeat; adds alto sax & congas, some great solos
4. 3:07 – emotional vocal, lovely intro & violin solo
5. 3:15 – excellently nuanced vocal, pretty Spanish guitar
6. 3:54 – upbeat, sounds a bit like “My Way” in spots – good bass solo
7. 2:56 – just piano & voice, after-hours nightclub ballad
8. 8:58 – romantic; piano gets a bunch of solos, add some backing vox
9. 4:17 – relaxed… hey, this one sounds like “Dancing in the Dark”!
