Dark, brooding indie rock. Dynamic with loud rocking parts along side sad melodic parts. This is Wright’s 5th album and she plays all guitar and piano as well as sings. Christina Files (The Swirlies, Victory At Sea, Mary Timony) plays the drums and really bangs on them. Produces by Steve Albini and you can tell immediately with the amazing sound of the drums.
**1. Starts out folk-y and goes into dark emo-y guitar. The chorus has sharp choppy guitar. There is a desperate but assured and angry sound in her voice.
**2. A slower plodding pace. Bigger more forceful singing. Does rock out a couple times. Good head nodding guitar during the chorus.
3. Finger picked folk guitar to begin. This track goes back and forth between quiet and rocking parts.
4. Another track that begins with finger picked folk guitar. Soft, sad, “you’ll be the death of me”. Some bowed string instrument shows up in the background but I can’t tell what it is. Never rocks out.
5. Keyboards replace guitar. For some reason this reminds me of PJ Harvey but I can’t figure out exactly why.
6. Another track with piano instead of guitar. Sad and quiet. Just piano and vocals.
7. A unique slow guitar riff and vocal with a bit of angst.
8. Can’t place this one. More intricate guitar noodling yet still repetitive.
**9. Descends and descends. “Lonely I start and alone I’ll leave”.
Good stuff. -mph
