artist: systems officer album: systems officer label: Ace Fu Clean, well-produced indie-pop strongly reminiscent of the Flaming Lips. Enigmatic lyrics with images of failed revolution, regret, and memory. The production is so clean and well-engineered that it sounds commercial at first. If this EP had been recorded on a four-track in a bus terminal, would it be more indie? Solo project of Zack Smith, formerly of Three Mile Pilot and Pinback. Recommend tracks 2 and 3. No FCCs. 1) 120 bpm. clean guitar, bass, flaming lips vocals, bell-like synthesizer. 2) 180 bpm "Systems officer" more synthesizer, four-square drumming, unobtrusive but tasty guitar playing. Interesting change in character half way through the song. 3) 90 bpm. Low guitar or bass intro, quiet, mellow vocals 4) 108 bpm. Piano, plus usual usual instruments; later synthesizer. 5) 66 bpm. Very much like flaming lips. Not that that's bad. Alex D. |
