VINICIUS CANTUÁRIA – “Horse and Fish”
Bar None, 2004

BRAZIL – One of the great composers of MPB (Brazilian pop), Cantuária sings and plays guitars on this sweet album, mixing the tunes of other masters like Gilberto Gil and Tom Jobim in with his own. Mostly ballads, mostly spare, and often hauntingly tender, this is an odd little record that could fit in well with Brazilian, singer-songwriter, or heck, maybe even “sadcore” sets.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 9 (maybe 6,7)

1. 9:24 – atmospheric samba-jazz: moody guitar, trumpet, percussion
2. 4:08 – sleepy samba, simple and somehow slightly unsettling
3. 4:38 – another samba, relaxed, aching, and utterly delicious
4. 4:33 – quiet, pretty ballad: acoustic guitar, light percussion and voice
5. 5:36 – sexy, stripped-down, semi-Cuban vibe; trumpet adds spice
6. 7:25 – midtempo sexy rhythm, cute keyboard, weak English lyrics
7. 6:43 – slow, very moody pop w/shimmering guitar, lots of space
8. 4:32 – slow, heavy atmosphere, a bit loungey-jazzy
9. 3:47 – quiet mystery-samba intro with happy bits, spooky bits
10. 1:29 – Jobim tune, solo guitar & vox. Sweet but short
