Rene Lacaille - Mapou
This is an album of varied musical sounds, of many rhythms and cultures. The artist, Rene Lacaille is from the Indian Ocean island of La Reunion. Indeed it is a reunion of African, Indian, Madagascan and European influences. The history of the island as told by Rene in the liner notes is a must-read. The music is of so many styles - sega, maloya, tango, cha-cha-cha, samba and many more.
There is a predominance of drums and the underlying rhythm is similar in all the tracks.
Tracks 2, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19 are instrumentals. Mostly high tempo.
He has a deep throated voice and imparts a old grand-dad quality to the songs.
Track-1: Almost rap but pleasantly so with very basic beats.
Track-2: Faster tempo instrumental piece. Wind instruments, drums. Very chirpy ***
Track-4: Similar rhythm. Vocal la-la-las intertwined with the music. Uptempo.
Track-5: Mid-tempo. Drums mostly. Lilting tune. ***
Track-6: Interesting instrumental composition. Danceable.
Track-8: Drums with haunting strings.
Track 15: Some very fast stringing but very sparse music
Track 20: Tap dancing music with chanting. African influence perhaps.
