Sophisticated mainstream jazz. These are mostly covers, with only three compositions in Osby's highbrow, geometrically style (1, 3, 5). But it's still a session with plenty of complexity and free-minded improvising.|
Osby shines as usual, casually tossing off fast, upbeat sax solos. Pianist Megumi Yonezawa can really tear it up. Tracks with Nicholas Payton on trumpet (2,4,6,7) offer some nice dual-leader counterpoint.
Live recording: watch for applause.
1- Stumbling midtempo theme; gets looser/faster for sax solo
2*- Free but lyrical version of Gershwin standard. Disjoint.
3- Mid/slow, relaxed. Opens with piano spillover.
4- Jaunty and fast, with a nice piano solo
5*- Midtempo, just a bit dark. A sax showcase.
6*- Fairly fast: bebop classic given a cool modern tone
7- Slow song; Joan Osborne on vocals. Band intro at the end.
