Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2004-07-30 | ||
Sophisticated mainstream jazz. These are mostly covers, with only three compositions in Osby's highbrow, geometrically style (1, 3, 5). But it's still a session with plenty of complexity and free-minded improvising. Osby shines as usual, casually tossing off fast, upbeat sax solos. Pianist Megumi Yonezawa can really tear it up. Tracks with Nicholas Payton on trumpet (2,4,6,7) offer some nice dual-leader counterpoint. Live recording: watch for applause. 1- Stumbling midtempo theme; gets looser/faster for sax solo 2*- Free but lyrical version of Gershwin standard. Disjoint. 3- Mid/slow, relaxed. Opens with piano spillover. 4- Jaunty and fast, with a nice piano solo 5*- Midtempo, just a bit dark. A sax showcase. 6*- Fairly fast: bebop classic given a cool modern tone 7- Slow song; Joan Osborne on vocals. Band intro at the end. |
