EARMA THOMPSON – “Just in Time” The Sirens, 2004 Chicago is crammed with fine jazz musicians who are virtually unknown outside the city limits. Earma Thompson has been playing piano for over 50 years, with an elegant yet bluesy style that makes her an excellent accompanist (her usual role), but also makes for a pleasant lead, as on this CD. She performs standards, but some of them are off the beaten track. Piano & bass only, two tracks add sax. Fo’s picks: 2, 3, 5, 11 1. 4:01 – deliberate pacing, swings lightly, mostly happy piano 2. 3:41 – slow smoky blues, tasty piano solo goes high and low 3. 3:52 – medium cocktail-lounge swing, tasteful and breezy 4. 5:32 – upbeat, neighborhood jazz-bar feel. Sax is dull, but piano is good 5. 4:29 – upbeat, sophisticated, buoyant piano practically sings 6. 4:59 – feels mechanical despite interesting piano phrases 7. 4:33 – Miles Davis blues with sax, same comments as #4 8. 4:02 – relaxed, Charlie Brown-ish head, more romantic in solos 9. 4:51 – midtempo swing, bright piano, I can almost hear the bar ambiance 10. 5:05 – another cocktail-lounge swinger, good left-right hand interplay 11. 4:12 – Walkin’ Jimmy Smith blues, piano refined but greasy at the edges [ Fo ] – 9/9/2004 |
