Not to Much to be Loved as to Love
----------------------------------------
Everybody’s favorite troubadour is back with his eccentric aesthetics of the sing/songwriter style. Bare production, prominent laid-back percussion with Latin touches, classic guitar with same tendencies. Lyrics, as always, anywhere between ingenious and demented. More specifically, he’s back singing about famous painters (twice!) and in foreign tongues (Spanish and French, twice each). Lots of fun tracks, although few of tracks are really strange.
Picks: 1, 3, 6, 7, 14.

1. ** Classic tune, heartfelt lyrics. Slow tempo. **
2. Filler, mostly guitar quiet reprise of first track.
3. * Upbeat tale of Vincent van Gogh (“He loved color and he let it show”), quiet guitar solos, cute.*
4. First of the Spanish-language track. Mid tempo, dark pseudo-Mexican tune. Latin-style brass as well.
5. “He gave us the whine to taste” - a religious track or a mundane whimsy tale of a simple situation? Jazzy electric adds to the acoustic guitar sound.
6. * Dark, some piano, singing about Salvador Dali – “…Dali was there for me… he was my guide to the dream world”. Cool/strange. Mid/slow. *
7. * Mid/up tempo, hand claps, strumming, ironic (“My baby loves me now… even more than I prayed for”). Trumpet solo (by local artist Ralph Carney who does all brass/wind on the album). *
8. Upbeat, in Spanish again.
9. Slow/mid; repetitive lyrics (title), woodwinds, clunky percussion. Ends w/bells.
10. French. And bad-accented one, if you trust my word on it (I don’t speak French). Why? What does he say? He’s tired of something, it seems. Anyway, mid tempo, marching drums in the middle.
11. Mid/up tempo ode to the world’s odors. Says “piss” – FCC?
12. Accordion slowly accompanies dark text about Mumia Abu Jamal, death row inmate, and the struggle for him. The vocal delivery, rhyming and weight are all off… this is truly a bizarre one.
13. French again. Slow, quiet. Delicate percussion, some woodwind. Mellow.
14. [Bonus Track: Dream of the Sea]* Similar to 12, only vocal delivery is more accessible, nice. *
15. [Bonus Track: Wandering with Mike P] Slow quiet version of 1, with some different lyrics.
