Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2004-08-12
Another retrospective of ovarian NYC no-wave pioneer band, full back catalog 1977-1978. Slightly less obtuse than DNA, more melodic and accessable, but still far more abstract than the bands they spawned/influenced like Sonic Youth. Tribal beats, arrhythmia, noise stuff, desperate female vocs, strange sickness all over the place. Liner notes give good history, talks of their associations with Eno, Arto Lindsay (DNA), the whole no-wave scene. Check it out. Play this one for sure.

1) upbeat pensive driving
2) dark, slow bass driven, lo-fi vocs and discordant guit that launched a million Sonic Youths
3) classic from No New York comp, driving bass urgent with bizarre sounds and total no-wave guitars
4) slow dissonant dark, weird moany fem vocs
5) more bizarre percussive sounds, no wave Branca’esque driving feel
6) tribal tom tom drums and dissonance with near chanted vocs
7) lower fi pulsing, drum hits, crunching near noise no wave
8) lo fi rhythmic with strange sounds galore
9) a-rhythmic cliunky bash, great!
10) tribal simple beat
11) fucked up abstract arty noisey
