Theoretical music, i.e., music produced after the development of some theory of sound or melody or harmony and intended to demonstrate or exhibit aspects of that theory. Hence, somewhat interesting to follow if you’re into that game and if you understand the theory 1. Alternating some quiet sections and some quite loud sections, this track is meant to demonstrate the power of sound (i.e. to knock down walls). The sounds therefore are sometimes quite intensely focused, other times more diffuse and chaotic. Watch for quiet at start and end. 2. Violin and tape piece whereby the main melodic theme is presented on violin in various ways and in various sound contexts. Unlinear, dynamic, and fascinating. 3. A palindromic five-parter. Part 1 is rather raucous and metallic. Part 2 is also metallic but there is an element of piano there that reminds me of Annie Gosfield’s work. In Part 3, harmonic, but not melodic parts predominate. In Part 4, “inharmonic” thumps and such take the reins again. In Part 5, metalloids rule. 4. A live duo of reed and piano or accordion are confronted by a tape containing all manner of music – chamber, rock, wind orchestras. The live duo’s repetition of their part and the frisson with the tape accompaniment forms the theory behind the piece 5. Springing from one section/sound to another |
