Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2004-08-15 | ||
Soft and gentle, with a mainstream sound and plenty of ECM atmosphere. Slow, comforting piano chords set the foundation for Stanko’s trumpet wanderings. The piano tends to stay in the pocket even during solos, but Stanko’s trumpet can conjure up a bold sound: icy diagonal cuts across the comfortable backdrop (see 2 and 5). Most tracks keep to a floaty, mid/slow feel. The backing band (piano, bass, drums) are Stanko’s regular band: three young Polish musicians he discovered about a decade ago. 1- Slow, sweet, sentimental – maybe a bit too much so 2- Has a couple explosive moments for trumpet 3- Mid/fast: Nice vamps and a gently energetic piano solo 4- Kind of “ends” at –3:50, then restarts in very slow territory 5- Starts with odd, quiet percussion 6- Crisp, compact sound; mid-fast feel. Edgy. 7- Floaty, gentle; almost nightclubby 8- Quiet 9- Mid/fast, upbeat 10- Midtempo, happy and mellow 11- Slow, delicate |
