If 24 Hour Party People were a CD, this would be it - a vaguely ironic genre-bending mix of punk and house via New Wave, which means retro beat machines and synthesizers, and heavily distorted guitars and vocals, all supporting catchy tunes. I like the faster stuff better, but this is personal preference. Unfortunately lots of FCC’s.
* 1 - slow, with stretching, tearing distortions and mangled vocals; angsty with an edge. FCC’s
2 - short companion piece to 1, thunderstorm noises
3 - mid-tempo, more word mangling, sudden ending, FCC’s
* 4 - faster beat w/ handclaps, transistor radio voice distortion, guitar samples(?), road-trippy. FCC’s
5 - mid-tempo, guitar driven, great build, retro UK, love the triple exclamation marks. FCC’s
6 - shouted vocals + repetitive guitar pedal notes, desperately upbeat. FCC’s
* 7 -Bouncy beat machine, basic guitar, distorted, shouted vocals. FCC’s
*** 8 - Beat machine, old synthesizer/Casio, very distorted vocals “Smash the emergency glass”, perky tune pops out occasionally. Very sensual sex and destruction thing. No FCC’s!!
** 9 - eerie rattles, sibilant synths, breaks into house beat; this is deep in electronic territory. No FCC’s.
** 10 - underground-y early techno style with computer-mangled sex talk vocals, very Leisure Suit Larry. No FCC’s.
