Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend

“Outsider Music”, female singing with simple guitar/piano accomp. This sounds like your anti-talented kindergarten teacher when she picked up the school guitar and decided to sing the class some songs. The delivery is simple, the words come across simple, the melodies as basic as possible, just a guitar and her off-beat off-key singing. But the tempo changes, the lyrics, the entire thing takes on a whole new meaning when you realize that the joke is on us. This was made in 1982 by a talented airline pilot (the first female 747 captain, who is presently the top-ranked female pilot for “the worlds largest airline”). Original copies are impossible to find but “Nuggetologist” Erik Lindgren came across this in the late 90’s and, well, here you go: thanks Arf! Arf! (Lindgren calls this record “the Holy Grail” of outsider music). Set this next to your Langley Schools music project in your shrine to sweet bizarre archeological gems. Tangela in all reality was the host of a cable talk show in LA at the time, no stranger to art and media. Though this certainly is the apogee of “dingy, kooky” this woman has a Bachelors in Art and Architecture, Masters in Poli-Sci and Public Administration and a Doctorate in Aerospace Safety and Systems Analysis, all from USC. Not to mention “mesmerizing blue eyes” and a set of legs and hips to die for (yikes! Check out the booklet!). Okay, my sexism is part of the shtick: The original album cover featured her in her pilots uniform, seemingly an advert for NOW, feminism, then the back had her in a pair of hot pants spread across the trunk of a jaguar. So there, nothing matters, including your intonation. Confused yet? Listen to the music and it’ll only get weirder. (p.s. oh shit, I guess she ran for mayor of LA too!…and has “improved Einstein’s theory of relativity”…oh and the character Phoebe on “friends” was apparently inspired by her..how “LA” can you get?…) (p.p.s. do yourself a huge life-benefit and read the included booklet, brilliant!)

1) upbeat simple feel, “su-hoo-hoo-hoo-per mar-har-har-ket blues”…a trip to the cheese, veggie sections, and how confounding it can be to the over-privileged
2) a touch of reverb and a slow delivery at first, could be a love song but nope
3) “jet lady” upbeat, some piano and then some rudimentary percussion and sounds, barely, bizarre
4) simple strumming, about space man
5) dark, sad feel
6) piano accomp.
7) back to guitar, gardening
8) “I’m just a stinky poodle”…nuff sed
9) sung in various languages, love song
10) “how to be a housewife”, step by step manual
11) more lush, with instruments, angelic ode to “city of angels”
12) another simple love song
13) another version of Jet Lady, guitar only, teasing, making the airline pilot sexy
14) another version of City of Angels
15) sung duet with a man, seduction, love, church gospel tone
16) similar to 15
17) recorded recently (2003) version of Stinky Poodle with her kids and family, drives home the “kindergarten” feel of this whole thing, are you laughing yet?
