Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2004-11-02
Amalgam of styles. “A collection of noisy textures and driving rhythms that recall styles ranging from punk to gamelan” says the one sheet quite aptly. Halting rhythms, prog-jazzy approach yet lush melodic sense of indie rock and presence of no-wave dissonance. Members have played with Anthony Braxton, Caroliner Rainbow, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, et al etc. For fans of Parts and Labor, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, Chicago post-rock and Ipecac/Mike Patton type strangeness. Great stuff.

1) disjunct dissonant guitar rock with pretty off time choruses
2) vibes take center, disjunct with pretty vocs again
3) epic washes of chords and free-jazz feel, almost intro-like
4) halting, with noisey analog synth, cool
5) rather chill synthy feel, pretty
6) loud bursts with synth, slow plodding noisy overall
7) vibes appear with echo’y trombone for a decidedly jazzy, post-rocky flavor, without the pretense
8) fusion/prog approach, Fender Rhodes with fuzzy guitar a la Soft Machine, dynamic
9) vibes ring for a proggy indie rock feel, great doubled up vocals, good stuff
10) slow, chill with trombone and vibes and jazzy drum embellishments, really drinks from the well of interesting prog, Soft Machine fusion
