John Butcher / Gino Robair – New Oakland Burr
A series of short pieces from saxophonist Butcher and local percussionist Robair. Both musicians are constantly pushing the boundaries of what sounds their respective instruments can produce, and being able to hear them do this together is always wonderful. My favorite aspect of this disc is that (due to the aforementioned boundary ignoring) it never sounds like a sax/drum duet, just one coherent mass of music. Excellent stuff.
All tracks are great, I particularly like #3 with its bowed styrofoam, the ominous sounds of #9 as well as #13 and #15.
