Guus Janssen – Hollywood OK Pieces

Nice disc of Dutch improv swing. The French Horn and Bassoon lend an unusual air to the front line and all involved are top notch soloists. The composed parts are engaging with lots of playful counterpoint, in the true Amsterdam tradition (ICP, Willem Breuker)

*1. Deft, speedy swing with free solos
**2. Playful contrapuntal head with laid back solos. Fades down into bassoon solo, which (abruptly) segues to...
3. ...bassoon solo to start, then a melancholy blues followed by a sprawling free for all
*4. Bouncy light swing
5. Lush ballad
*6. Mellow moody straight swing
7. Starts slowly, builds to deliberate, classical improv, then segues to next track
*8. Sputtery clicks to start, leads to bright bounce
